Microsoft Is Bringing the Start Menu Back for Win8
MS will no longer update XP after April 8Right now is an excellent time to get a new Windows 8 computer.
-Everybody at MS who brought in Win8 Metro has er, ah, retired.
-Toshiba laptops are really cheap since everyone hates 8.
ANOTHER WORK-AROUND FOR TECHIE TYPES click HERE
-There is a slick $5 program that makes it appear just like Win7 or XP
- Best Buy US is offering $100 credit to people who bring in their XP trades. CLICK
I have installed The FIX on 12 computers and it is excellent.
www.startisback.com The whole layout is Win7. The clumsy Metro face is available but suppressed. Reversible after 30-day free trial.

On Tuesday, April 8, Microsoft will stop “supporting” Windows XP. If you’re still using a computer that’s running this old operating system, you do have options.
But what if none of the options work for you? What if, for a perfectly good reason (like the fact that upgrading from XP will cost you either money or time, and you have neither), you’re stuck with a computer using XP? What’s going to happen to you and your computer on April 9?
Nothing you’ll notice, at least not right away. Windows XP will continue to work. But your risk of a security breach into your computer increases over time. Microsoft is adamant that Windows XP can no longer be considered a safe place to store your digital assets.
Even though the operating system has been repaired (“patched”) literally over 1,000 times, it’s got an old foundation, and it can’t stand up to modern security threats. Unless you want your data stolen, your home network hacked, or your computer taken over to be used as a slave to send spam, you need to get off this creaky platform. That’s what Microsoft says.
But if you have to keep using an old XP machine, you can decrease your exposure in a few ways:
1. Get the last version.
Make sure you have the final version of Windows XP. Connect your computer to the Internet and let it update itself. Or find Windows Update on your computer and let it run. Make your version of XP as secure as possible, because it’s not going to get any better after this.
2. Update your antivirus software.
3. Make sure your browser is up to date.
4. Be extra careful with email.
5. The same goes for Facebook.
6. Be extra, extra careful with USB sticks, CDs, and DVDs.
7. For the ultimate in safety, disconnect from the Internet.

Restore Point is a light version of Back Up. It is easy, quick and very incomplete.
MORE INFO HERE click
Have you run disk cleanup and defrag recently ? Why backup junk? Clean up first.
A FULL BACKUP is vital !! This procedure brings EVERYTHING back to today's layout and content. Here is how:
Find some DVD-r blanks. For safety make 2 copies with 2 different brands (Don's experienced advice) You will need 3, 4 or 5 DVDs of each brand. Peter buys whatever is on sale at Fry's or Costco. Trade some with a friend.
READY TO START
Insert a labeled DVD-r - named so you will recognize it in a year. When the option box opens, just X it closed.
Mouse to START. In the SEARCH box type Backup and restore.
Click on BACK UP NOW.
Go have a beer and check back in 30 minutes to insert the second DVD-r. The computer nags about the right way to label the disks.
Making two copies lets you keep a set in each house.
Alternately you might buy a new thumb drive of 16 Gb+ and backup onto this. More is better.
