Digital Equipment needed for tiny subjects:
-Any digicam will get you started if you just crowd close to the subject.
-Check your manual and camera for Macro features already installed.
-Advanced users might buy a larger camera that accepts your old film camera lenses.
-To buy closeup lenses or extension tubes, take your camera to the store to ensure compatability.
-Use a tripod & cable release. Remove center post.
Depth of Field Issues
-Scenery shots keep focus for distant and middling subjects. Macro shots keep focus only through 1/4 inch or so. Depth-of-field preview buttons are helpful.
-Manually choose small aperatures for largest depth of field eg F16 .
-Special Macro flash units freeze moving subjects like bees.
Direction of Light
-Backlighting gives translucent effect
-Sidelight emphasizes shape
-Front light emphasizes details.
More considerations
-Be aware of background for distractions. Try black cardboard.
-An easy and fast way to adjust photos is the online site www.pixlr.com . It is very basic but does the job for quick fixes. Photoshop Elements from Adobe is VERY advanced. PaintShop Pro is affordable. .......www.picasa.com is online and free.
-Slides-to-digital gadgets convert but are extremely slow. Commercial services charge about $1 each. Try the gizmo in the club lab.
-Max suggests projecting slides on a flat paint wall and using your digicam.
-The digicam movie setting converts film movies to digital format free. Or take one reel of 8mm film to Costco to try their service.
Saving & Backing Up Pix
-Windows will crash. It will take files in My Pictures down as well. External hard drives or thumb drives are safer. Also burn pix onto CD-R or DVD-R. BACK UP at least WEEKLY !!
-Remember the crash warnings from SOSmesa.com !
