Jan 6 Meeting

Solutions for problems can be easily found on www.YouTube.com .  There is a video explanation for most problems if you type in this phrase: How to make your xxxxxx  blah blah x xxx xxx  xxxxx. The Search pops up several explanations.  Try it out.

The meeting opened at 7 pm under the gavel of Jim Tilbe. 35 members present. 3 guests.

The nominations for next year's Board positions will be accepted for one more week.  The Vice President position has one nominee - Maureen DeSorcy.  More nominees are needed.

A problem-solving session followed with assorted problems related to Win-8, new iPads and Androids.

- Harold recommended a new Costco deal: PC laptop, Toshiba, i5 processor. See local advertising flyers.

- Peter installed the utility that removes the Metro patchwork screen from Win-8 startup. It is on a member's Toshiba laptop.

- Wireless printer problems were discussed at length. It is a valley of misery. Setup is very complex and touchy. Fewer problems come with wired printers.

Don Davidson will start his iPad classes  on Jan 28.
The time is to be decided.
To attend, please contact Don by email at:   davidson.dg@gmail.com .  Be sure to include your phone # and email.   Dates:  Jan 28,  Feb 11,  Feb 25.

Dec 9 meeting
Last meeting for this year on Dec 16. New dates in Jan 2014
In the new year the club votes on Board positions: Pres., V-P, Treasurer, Secretary etc..  Can you offer your services to assist your club ?

The meeting began at 7 pm with Don Davidson in the chair.  33 members were present.  Six new visitors dropped in for the iPad session.

Peter is still happy with the Start-Is-Back utility that makes the Win8 desktop look like the familiar Win7 interface.  Still on the 30-day free trial.  Harold is testing the alternate utility called Start-8.  We will report on how it looks and works anon.
Do NOT try to install these utilities on the new Windows tablets !  The tablet version of Win8 is NOT really Win8.

Printer and wireless printer questions were raised.  Don is pleased with his newest Epson wireless printer.

Don's iPad presentation ensued.
-Remember that there is no USB connection from iPads.
-iPads are not the complete answer: you also need a real computer.

-File transfers can be done through the Cloud, email attachments or thru DropBox.
- Your iPad will connect thru a special cord to either PC or Mac computers.
- For printing you need the proprietary Apple AIRprinter.

-Software resembling Office is for sale at $9 per topic.  Other programs are also available for purchase.
- Don demoed the GPS and map-search features. These apps are generally free from the App Store. Don has 250+ apps installed. Daily a few paid apps will pop up in the freebie listing.
- Internet connection is done through standard internet. (Internet is also available through your cellphone plan. Probably and pricey.)

- Skype works on iPads as well as the proprietary FaceTime. FT is only Apple-to-Apple.
- Open apps suck memory. You must remember to close the apps off or they continue in the background.  Press the Home button twice and then flip the program closed.

- Apple free classes are available by phoning the Apple store in Santan.  Phone for a 15-minute lesson appointment. CLICK  Also see the Apple tutorials atop this page.

- You should install Find My iPad to track a lost iPad.  Also consider a password.

In the new year Don will schedule group meetings on iPad as a Special Interest class.
