December 2 Meeting
22 members were present
The President was absent with the 'flu so the chair was taken by Harold at 7 pm.
The session was an open problem-solving search for assorted difficulties. Problems with Excel spreadsheet formatting were common and some resolved.

The usual email problem has appeared. Snowbirds should use Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo since the address book is on their site. It goes with you.  If you use Cox here and Sympatico in Canada, the webmail feature does not include your address book. When you close your seasonal Internet account, you lose the functionality. Consider switching.
(There may be a tweak in the mail settings that can solve this problem if you bring your laptop to the meeting.)

The recent layout changes in Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo are giving us all headaches since previous functions are hidden, changed or renamed.

The recent flurry of scams and virus attacks by FaceBook, eMail and telephone has alerted everybody. Read below to avoid piracy.
Don advises that we do not use our credit cards for online purchases. Instead set up a PayPal account at www.paypal.com.  This is a secure system to backstop your purchases online. Otherwise your online credit card info goes to merchants with undependable security. What commercial site has never been hacked ?  When pirates can crack the WhiteHouse site, who is safe ?

Peter demonstrated a utility program that fixes the hated Windows-8 tile interface. It reverts your miserable Win-8 tile StartUp to the familiar Win-7 desktop. Toolbar and Start button return with programs listed.  Search is returned. The sun is shining and the birds singing again ! Peter has used it for 3 days and about 6 hours without a hiccup.  Programs seem to install and run as usual.  Check it out - CLICK HERE
Peter loves it so far.  Wait a week to see if it continues before you consider switching. The operating system is still Win-8 but with a familiar face.
The download is quick and cheap ! $3   BUT  the  programmer is Russian and the website has some hints of Russia that are suspicious.  The utility is a recommendation from PC World Magazine so it should be okay. Payment of the $3 is a problem - Russia and credit card ??!!  Never !

This was the point in the meeting when Don made the PayPal suggestion.  To pay through PayPal would be the best security. If there is a problem with a merchant, PayPal is there to yank on their chain. And the merchant never sees your credit card details.
PayPal's reputation is excellent and makes online shopping secure.

IF YOU HAVE A PROLEM WITH YOUR LAPTOP, BRING IT TO THE MEETING SO SOMEBODY CAN SEE IT UP CLOSE.

Members were chased out of the meeting at 8:25 when the lights went out.
